FAQs

Have questions? We have answers!

  • What is the ideal age to see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic check-up by age 7. However, there is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. We see patients of all ages.

  • How long will I need to wear braces?

The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case. Most patients’ treatment timeline is 18 to 24 months.

  • Do braces hurt?

You may be discomfort for a few days after getting braces or adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers can alleviate discomfort from orthodontic appliances.

  • Can I play sports with braces?

Yes, you can participate in sports and other recreational activities with braces. Just remember to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces.

  • What foods should I avoid with braces?

Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods such as nuts, popcorn, caramel, and chewing gum to prevent damage to your braces.

  • How often should I visit the orthodontist during treatment?

Typically, you will need to visit your orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks for adjustments and to monitor progress.

  • Can adults get braces?

Absolutely! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age.  Many adult patients prefer discreet treatment options, such as clear aligners or ceramic braces, to straighten their smiles.

  • What are the different types of braces available?

Our treatment options include traditional metal braces, lingual braces, and clear aligners like Invisalign. Your orthodontist will present the best options for your needs at your consultation.

  • Will I need to wear a retainer after my braces are removed?

Yes, wearing a retainer is crucial to maintaining your new smile and preventing teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Call us if you lose or break your retainer right away!

  • How do I care for my teeth and braces?

Brush your teeth after every meal, floss daily, and use an interdental brush to clean around your braces. Regular dental check-ups are also important during orthodontic treatment.
